Business Model Generation by Alexander Osterwalder may just replace Business Development courses in B-schools worldwide...
Why read this book: Are you sick of writing 30-100+ page business plans, just to have it become obsolete in days/weeks? I am!
Try this business model canvas. It's simple and straightforward using pictures and real life examples (Apple, Legos, etc). I found it to be really inspiring to get the creative juices flowing when attempting to think through a "big idea'. You can map out an entire business model in fewer than 20 words. I treat the book more like a reference text, always carrying it around with me.
How it can help you: If you are an entrepreneur or an intra-preneur, this book helps you easily layout your idea and think through how it works. It's a methodology that uses "design-thinking" to create a better and more innovative business model.
The book has a great layout:
1. Canvas and how it all works
2. Business model patterns - what they are, how to spot them, how to innovate on them
3. Design - how to begin thinking through a business problem and creating a model
4. Strategy - how to navigate and innovative ways to approach this methodology
5. Process - walks you through execution
Here's an example of how I used the canvas to think through this site:
I hope you enjoyed the post and more importantly, this book! Let me know if you've used it and if it helped you!
